Riding Life’s Waves”:

Lessons from a Not-So-Graceful Surf Session

It started out as the perfect morning: the sun was shining, birds were chirping, and I was off to catch some waves. Little did I know, this would be the day where my ego would wage war with reality — a classic case of underestimating nature and overestimating my abilities. A dangerous combination for someone who’s, at best, an average surfer and, well, a pretty mediocre swimmer. What followed would become one of the most humbling life lessons from surfing I’ve ever had.

Paddling out, I watched mountains of water rise before me. Was I daunted? Not a chance. I powered on, paddling and duck diving for what felt like half an hour, finally making it to the back. In hindsight, this should have been clue number one: if it takes that long to get out, maybe you’re not quite ready for the wave size. Clue number two? The fact that it was just me, the great ocean, and two other surfers at what is usually a packed spot. But did I take the hint? Of course not.

Already, I was picturing my victory lap—WSL trophy in one hand, my adoring fans clamoring for autographs. I was in the perfect spot. I turned, paddled for the biggest wave I had ever seen, got up on my board… and immediately got smacked right back down. The fall took so long that I had time to mentally list every life regret, with “attempting this wave” at the top.

The fall took so long that I had time to mentally list every life regret, with “attempting this wave” at the top.

As I tumbled, disoriented and completely out of my depth, I finally surfaced only to get dragged under by the next wave. While staring up at thousands of tiny bubbles, desperately seeking a glimmer of light or a hint of air, you might think I’d be reflecting on my family, my life goals, or some grand epiphany. Nope. What I actually heard was my inner critic going, “Seriously? You knew this was a bad idea. Why do you always do this? Why can’t you just take life easy?”

So, why am I telling you this story?

Because, terrifying as it was, this little ocean misadventure taught me a few valuable life lessons:

1. Let Go of the Need for Control

The more I kicked and struggled, the faster I was losing oxygen, and it wasn’t getting me to the surface any quicker. Sometimes, letting go conserves more energy than fighting against the current. As moms (or just humans, really), we often try to control every aspect of life to protect our kids or ourselves from harm. But sometimes, our constant vigilance just makes things worse. Letting go doesn’t mean giving up—it means conserving your breath (and sanity) for when it truly counts.

2. Taking Notice of the Signs Life Gives You

Some call it a gut feeling or intuition, that sense you can’t quite explain but somehow guides you in the right direction. Practice listening to that inner voice, and let it guide you, whether it’s keeping you safe or leading you toward prosperity. Sometimes, life gives us little clues—a quiet warning or a feeling that something isn’t quite right. It’s worth paying attention to those signs. Next time you’re in a situation that feels off, pause and trust your instincts. They might just save you from a wipeout, literally or metaphorically.

3. Push Your Boundaries, but Know Your Limits

I’m all for pushing myself, whether it’s in fitness, parenting, or life in general. But there’s a difference between challenging yourself and ignoring your limits. Whether it’s overtraining, overcommitting, or taking on every PTA event, we’ve got to listen to our bodies and minds when they’re begging for a break.

4. Manage Your Inner Critic

That little voice that pipes up when you’re down? Yeah, it’s usually not helpful. Since that wipeout, I’ve worked on being kinder to myself. It’s taken mindfulness practice (and a good sense of humor), but now when my inner critic tries to knock me down, I recognize those thoughts for what they are—just thoughts—and let them float by like passing waves.

5. Prepare Your Body for Stress

Life doesn’t always give you a heads-up before it hurls stress your way. Make sure your body’s equipped to handle it. That’s why we created our Adaptogen Complex, packed with scientifically backed adaptogens to support your body’s resilience, so when life’s waves hit, you’re less likely to get knocked down (literally or metaphorically).
